Questions for classroom discussion and assignments:
- The author discusses stealing, which is a major theme in her Newbery Award-winning book, A Single Shard. Write an essay answering the following question: Is it stealing if it is something that cannot be held in your hands, for example music over the Internet?
- Research and define copyright laws — their origin and meaning today.
- The author talks about researching the Erie Canal, and explains how the locks work. Research an invention that interests you and make a presentation to the class.
- Linda Sue Park discusses 3-line Korean poetry called sijo. The first line introduces the topic. The second line develops the topic. The third line twists the topic. Try to create your own 3-line poetry.
- Linda Sue Park says, ”We are afraid of what we don’t know.” Do you agree? Take a position on this topic and write an essay.
- Linda talks about how to develop a story. She says you must have a character with quests — both internal and external. The story revolves around the character’s solutions to these quests. Invent a character who has both internal and external quests. As a follow-up assignment, develop a story around his or her character.
